The plantar fascia, the band of connective tissue running from the heel to the base of the toes, takes much of the load. Add a calf stretch because the calf connects to the heel through the Achilles tendon. Stand facing a wall, place one foot back with the heel down, and lean forward until the calf stretches. The calf and the plantar fascia are mechanically linked, so loosening one reduces pull through the other.
Warm water, cool water, and Epsom salts
A warm foot bath at around 38 to 40 degrees Celsius widens blood vessels in the foot and eases muscle tension. Fifteen minutes is the useful amount. The heat and the pause from standing are the main active ingredients.
Epsom salts, or magnesium sulfate, are the standard addition. The common claim is that magnesium passes through the skin in enough quantity to relax muscles. Evidence for transdermal magnesium uptake at meaningful levels is thin, and a 2017 review in the journal Nutrients concluded that the skin-absorption case was not established.
The salts can soften skin, and the ritual can feel pleasant. The muscle relaxation, though, is best explained by heat dilating vessels and by the simple fact that the feet are finally unloaded for a quarter of an hour. If you buy salts, the cheap version serves the purpose.
Cold has a separate use. If the foot is swollen and hot after hours of standing, cool water or an ice pack wrapped in a cloth reduces swelling more effectively than heat. Alternating warm and cool water in a contrast bath drives blood in and out of the tissue, the same pumping effect used in sports recovery.
Shoes, mats, and the hard floor
Most post-hosting foot pain begins with the footwear worn during the hosting. Heated and vibrating foot massagers do provide warmth and mechanical stimulation, so they can feel good and can help local circulation. A warm bath and thumb pressure reach the same basic mechanisms at a lower cost, while many devices sit in the 40 to 150 euro range. That gap between confident packaging and ordinary mechanics is still the strange part of the category.
