Magnesium chloride flakes have a slippery feel and clump quickly in a damp bathroom. Store them in a sealed jar with the lid fully tightened. Leave the container open and, over a few weeks, the flakes pull moisture from the air and can harden into a block at the bottom. That open jar is the usual way a batch gets ruined.
Why the dose needs room in the water
Claims about magnesium crossing the skin during a soak remain disputed, and the available research is thin. Warm water at about 38 to 40 degrees Celsius has a clearer physical effect: it increases blood flow to muscle tissue and helps loosen connective fascia that tightens after standing, lifting, and hunching over a stove.
The dissolved magnesium and sulfate also alter the bath itself. They raise the density of the water slightly, change how it feels against the skin, and many people report less of the wrinkled-fingertip effect compared with plain tap water. The larger relief comes from heat and buoyancy reducing the load on joints that have spent the holiday under strain.
Give magnesium a supporting role in the soak. That framing keeps the dose practical, because a tiny scattering of crystals will disappoint. Half a cup of total salt per bath is the floor where the water begins to feel different and where stiff hamstrings and an overworked lower back get more than scented heat.
Peppermint needs careful mixing
Peppermint essential oil is forceful. Ten drops in a full tub is plenty, and that amount can sting after shaving or on small cuts. Menthol gives skin a cooling sensation that pushes against the heat of the water, a combination that can feel especially good on tired calf muscles. Past fifteen drops, the cooling can turn into an unpleasant burn around sensitive areas.

Sleep timing after the soak
