The weaker claims concern airborne compounds called phytoncides, often credited with boosting immune-cell activity. Several studies report increases in natural killer cell counts after multi-day forest trips, but the conditions used high exposure over consecutive days, and autumn cold suppresses the volatile emissions those studies relied on. A single cold-weather afternoon is unlikely to deliver the immune effect seen in summer overnight protocols.
The calming effect can still come from the slowing and the sensory shift. In August, the same trails can require a 6:00 start to find quiet.
